Nov. 1 F&F Friday

Feature & Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read

This week's question: What book are you embarrassed to admit you LOVED? (try to think beyond Twilight)

My Answer: I really can't think of a specific book that I'm embarrassed I love. I guess any book with a suggestive cover I'm a little embarrassed to read in public. Also...now that I think of it, I still read some children's books just because they came out when I was younger but I never finished the series such as, The Girls vs. Boys series by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor.

Please leave a comment and share your FF. Happy Friday!!! :)

_________________________________________________________

Description (from Amazon): This book begins with a young and naive Elaine Brogan as she initially pursues her dream of a career as a photo model. After becoming entangled with a sleazy modeling agency, she decides to become a Secret Service agent, struggling through the arduous training academy. After her first disastrous assignment, she is transferred to Bulgaria. There, she meets Nick LaGrange, the love of her life.

My Review: Lust, Money, & Murder is one of the most suspenseful books I have read in a long time. Every time you think you have the story figured out and you know what will happen next, the author throws something in that completely changes your mind. They are small details that made me just stare at my screen like, "What just happened?"

The story starts of with Elaine Brogan as a child and sets the groundwork for her relationship with her father. Then a tragic event happens that leads Elaine from desiring to be a model to desperately striving to become an agent with the Secret Service.

The novel then takes the reader on a journey through Elaine's schooling and her training in the Secret Service. While she is stationed in the Bulgaria office (who knew the Secret Service had an office in Bulgaria?) she meets the love of her life, Nick LaGrange. I absolutely loved Nick because he loosened Elaine up and makes her forget the awful reason why she joined the Secret Service.

However, there is a villainous character who has had Elaine involved in their scheme from the very beginning. Someone has been using Elaine and people around her as puppets in their counterfeiting business. I can't really say who because it would be a spoiler. I personally thought it was one person until the end and it turned out to be someone else.

I would have liked to see more of Nick just because I love romance but when he comes in at the end of the novel it completely spurs up more action and suspense.

Excerpt: "“Cheap taxi to center!” “Very low price—” “One hundred dollars—” “New Mercedes, very comfortable—”

“Get out of my way,” Elaine snapped, plowing through them. She followed the signs to ground transportation.

When she stepped out onto the sidewalk, she was struck by a blast of cold air that chilled her to the bone—the temperature was well below zero. It was still dark outside, and the parking lot was covered with snow. Elaine desperately scanned the lot for the men, peering into the windows of the passing vehicles.

They’re probably long gone by now, she thought, terror-stricken. What I am going to do?

She desperately tried to think of someone who could help her, but the only person that came to mind was Nick. And he was in jail somewhere. Then, across the parking lot, she spotted the man with the pockmarked face. He was unlocking the door of a large black SUV. The other man was not with him.

“Taxi?” a voice said from behind her. Elaine whirled around, afraid it was the second man. But it was only a taxi driver, in the usual Russian taxi driver outfit—a cheap-looking brown faux leather jacket, a plaid scarf, and a black driver’s cap. He looked harmless—big, but with stooped over shoulders. He had sad eyes that reminded her of a basset hound’s. “I give very good price to center,” he said, vapor pluming from his mouth. “Ninety dollars. My car not so good—” he pointed to a little beat-up Lada that splattered with brown slush,”— but price very good.” The black SUV was pulling away now.

“Fine, let’s go,” she said, moving towards his car. The big man moved surprisingly fast for his size. He rushed over to the Lada and opened the passenger door for her, throwing the front seat forward. She climbed into the back of the cramped little Russian-made vehicle.

He got in and started the engine. “Which hotel?”

“See that black SUV?” Elaine said, pointing. “Jeep?” “Yes, jeep.” She had forgotten that’s what Russians called all SUVs.

“Follow the jeep.” As he pulled away, Elaine nervously glanced around the inside of the car, taking everything in, sizing him up. Attached to the dashboard was a square icon of Mary Magdalene. Next to it was a clipboard with color flyers for nightclubs, photos of scantily clad women on the front. In the compartment below, a dog-eared road atlas and a couple of short fishing poles, the type used for ice fishing. She didn’t think he was anything other than what he appeared to be, an independent taxi driver.

The SUV was picking up speed. It soon disappeared around the ramp that led to the highway. “Don’t lose it,” Elaine said, her voice trembling.

Overall Opinion: Overall, I loved Lust, Money, & Murder. I really enjoyed this book not only because of the action and suspense, but because of the strong female lead. Elaine is an amazing heroine who doesn't need a man to survive and flourish in her career. This is definitely a mystery and suspense book that is in no way predictable and I rate it 5 stakes.

Get to Know the Author (from Amazon): Mike Wells is an American bestselling author of over 20 "unputdownable" thriller and suspense novels, including Lust, Money, & Murder and Passion, Power, & Sin. Formerly a screenwriter, Wells has a fast-paced, cinematic writing style. His work is often compared to that of the late Sidney Sheldon, with strong and inspiring female heroes, tightly-written scenes, engaging action/dialogue, and numerous plot twists. Fallen Tears Review

Title: Fallen Tears

Author: Sarah J. Pepper

Genre: Fantasy, Paranormal, Romance

Publish Date: December 13, 2012

Length: 205 pages

Format: paperback, ebook

_____________________________________________

Description (from Amazon)An √©lite club of shamed angels – the Fallen – welcomes disgraced super-naturals, like me. Defiant and vengeful, we’re catalysts in destruction and mayhem, much to our angelic adversaries’ dismay. Satisfying the void left in our soulless bodies motivates many Fallen to play with feeble humans. For even though we wield infernal-powers, they have one thing we crave.

Souls.
As a Fallen, an infinite number of days lay before me – if I choose. The Big Man upstairs always gives us a choice. I can accept my fate and perish, or consume a human’s soul and live. The last one I devoured glows like a firefly inside my chest. One day, it’ll flicker and fade into darkness. The Archangels who cast me from heaven would claim victory in the everlasting battle we wage, unless I consume another.
My next victim? A young man with ridiculously enticing lips. Gorgeous doesn’t define his otherworldly appearance. His vogue hairstyle accentuates his sky-blue eyes. His laugh echoes in my ears. His perfect smile is burned to memory. The undeniable urge to consume his soul unveils my wicked inhibitions. I want him… his soul. One problem – he’s protected by a Guardian angel.

My Review: Can I please start of by saying that Sarah J. Pepper has some of the best book covers I have ever seen? I'm about to begin another of her books, Death of the Mad Hatter which also has an amazing cover (the review will be posted very soon).

That aside...

I absolutely loved Fallen Tears. I haven't read many books about angels or fallen angels and the ones that I have haven't really been too similar so the topic hasn't really been overdone IMHO like vampires and werewolves have. The story starts out by showing how Miriam was once an angel and how she fell. After the prologue alone I felt sympathy for the poor girl who was betrayed and had her life ruined by someone she trusted.

In order for Miriam to survive she must consume a human soul. This necessity as always been met until Miriam sets her sights on Lincoln to be her next victim. For some unknown reason Lincoln is different than other humans she has hunted.

The attraction between Lincoln and Miriam is so genuine and endearing. I think I loved the relationship even more so than usual because Miriam was fighting it and literally wanted to kill Lincoln half the time.

When Miriam discovers why Lincoln is different than other she has hunted I wanted to cry for her. She needs to make an extremely difficult decision after learning the truth because it will alter both of their lives.

I was extremely pleased with the ending of the book for the mere fact that it has an ending. So many books I have read lately have had cliffhanger endings which has led me to believe that authors are sadists. The ending of this novel will not disappoint and although it is a little predictable (there really aren't that many possible outcomes) it's the way that the outcome plays out that is the enjoyable part.

Excerpt: “Are you going to tell me how you were able to change their color so quickly, or are you going to let me believe their contacts?”

“It’s a Talent of mine.” He chuckled and then told me it was fine if I wanted to keep my secrets. I asked him why he cared.

“I worry about you,” he admitted. I reached down to get my dagger.

“Why do you care?” Lincoln grabbed my hand before it slid passed him. I couldn’t have been pleased to be sitting when the tantalizing wave trickled into me. I couldn’t imagine how wonderful it’d feel to consume his soul. But then he gave me a look of endearment that ruined my moment of hunger.

“One of the first things you told me was that you were emancipated from your mother… Are you close to your father?”

I snickered, “Dad keeps a watchful eye on all his children. Again, why do you care?” He gave me a knowing look, suggesting that we’d previously covered why he cared.

Stopped at a red light, he asked me where to turn to my place. “You can just pull over there,” I said, pointing to a vacant parking spot. It was now or never. “My place isn’t too far away. I can walk.”

“You don’t live close, do you?” Lincoln stated with absolute seriousness. “How would you possibly know that?”

“Because I live only a few blocks down from here, and I haven’t seen any people moving in or out in months.” He drove into the vacant spot. “Where do you live? No jokes. Just tell me.”

The firehouse I’d been squatting in wasn’t too far away, perhaps a mile. If I wasn’t overcome by the uncontrollable urge to hunt, I could probably figure out a way to live better. But the truth was that it consumed my thoughts, and I didn’t really care about worldly possessions. My biggest nuisance was finding something to eat.

“I’m not going to show you where I live,” I said, thinking that I might as well throw down a welcome mat for Daniel and the Archangels, for they would certainly seek Lincoln’s vengeance after I sliced him with my dagger.

I tried to release my hand from his handhold, but he refused to let go. Our gaze locked. Lincoln was baiting me; if I’d been able to force him away in the restaurant, which should have been impossible considering my girlish physique. I should have been able to pry my hand away from his, so why was I struggling to let go?

“Is it because I live amongst the wealthy?” he asked. I jerked my hand from his grasp and raised my eyebrow, daring him to ask me how I was able to over-power him. When he made no effort to comment, I pulled up the cuff of my jeans and grabbed the blade.

“No, you’d make any homeless person jealous even if you were considered middle class.” Grabbing my shoulders, he pulled me backwards just as I freed my weapon from its sheath. Forcefully gripping me, he looked in my eyes like he could unfurl my secrets if he searched hard enough.

His heart drummed against his chest, syncing with my racing one. “Miri, please tell me you have a place to call home.”

I told him I did, but he didn’t look convinced that it was safe enough for me. Hadn’t I proven I could take care of myself? I was stronger than him!

Overall Opinion: Overall, anyone who loves romance and warring emotions will enjoy this book. The conflicting feels of love and the need to consume a soul make the story so endearing. Many times I felt myself tearing up due to Miriam constantly pushing Lincoln away because she believes she will ultimately kill him. I happily give Fallen Tears 5 stakes and I wish there was a sequel.

Ecliptic Review

Title: Ecliptic

Author: Sara Lunardi

Series: Ecliptic Saga #1

Genre: Science Fiction, Fantasy, slight Romance

Publish Date: October 10, 2013

Length: 367 pages

Format: paperback, ebook

_________________________________________________

Description (From Amazon): "Have you ever wondered what the signs of the zodiac really are, and why they have influence on all human beings?" Alex asked us out of the blue. Was he kidding? What did this question have to do with our situation?

On the night of 13th June 2035, during an exceptional shower of shooting stars seen all over the world, mysterious signs representing zodiac constellations appear on the shoulders of Izie De Rossi and her twin brother Sam, two ordinary teenagers living in London.

From that night on, the lives of the twins will never be the same. A cruel countdown begins, leading them to fight for the survival of the entire human race alongside extraordinary creatures of the zodiac endowed with supernatural powers, the Guardians.

In the midst of all the dangers and sacrifices forced upon her by her mission, Izie meets the handsome and mysterious Riley. She feels immediately drawn to him in a shocking and overwhelming way...but things are not always as they seem.

My Review: Ecliptic is an incredible scifi/fantasy novel that focuses on astrology (which I love). Twins Izie and Sam live ordinary lives with their friend Ben until all three begin to develop powers on the 13th of June. This date is very important because it corresponds with information given in a prophecy. The twins eventually find out that they are Guardians of the zodiac sign Libra.

The novel follows two plot lines that eventually merge together. Both lines involve people who are learning and dealing with the powers that they have developed. Also, along the way the twins and some other Guardians learn that not all the Guardians of the zodiac are "good guys." They must fight against other Guardians who attempt to use the unique powers for their own gain.

The ending of the novel, before the epilogue, almost gave me a heart attack and I was going to be very upset with the way it ended. If the novel had ended without the epilogue there would have been a massive cliff hanger. The story still does end in a cliff but it is nowhere near as devastating as the one before the epilogue would have been.

Aside from a few grammatical errors and at one point I think the narration switches from third to first person, and back again, I think Ecliptic is a very well written novel. I loved the action scenes and the characters all felt real. Their emotions were beautifully described and I felt sympathy and anger along with them. The relationship between Izie and Riley seemed a little rushed but I guess when you're fighting for your life there isn't much time for dating. Plus there is a sequel coming so I will have to wait and see more of Izie and Riley.

Excerpt:  "Sophie nodded, she was ready. I knew I could rely on her, in difficult times she always showed great presence of mind. She was part of that category of people solid as the rock. She
hugged me with eagerness, it was a farewell.

"Good luck." she whispered in my ear.

"Remember your promise." I repeated looking her straight
in the eyes. Sophie returned my gaze, showing me that she would keep it. Knowing that Riley was safe gave me the strength to go through with it.

"Whenever you’re ready." Talia drew my attention towards her.

We checked again that no one was there and locked ourselves in one of the cabinets. Talia took us by the hand, ready to transport us. I looked down to the watch, and when the hands were in position, I nodded.

I could again feel the sensation of floating through the air, devoid from weight and shape. Time stood still for a few seconds. Dizziness came over me, rising from my stomach, I couldn’t get used to it.
Our essences merged into one shrouded by light.

Then the braking, as if we were precipitating into a vacuum. My heart rose into my throat, and in a moment everything was over.

The stone house and the paved courtyard appeared. Sam was standing there just a few feet from the entrance, his black eyes pointed in our direction.

It all happened in the blink of an eye.

Sophie moved slightly and my body relocated as if it weighed just few ounces. At the same time, I was softly pushed towards the house while my brother was sucked in our direction. I could only feel the air rushing past our bodies. We were close for a split second, I was able to brush his arm, but Sam showed no emotion. Then we switched positions, and I stopped in the middle of the courtyard.

Matteo and Allison didn’t have time to cross the entrance door to implement the counter-act that they were certainly prepared for. Talia instantly disappeared along with Sam and Sophie.

Now, I was alone."

Overall Opinion: Altogether I enjoyed this novel. I love astrology and was excited to read a story involving the zodiac signs. Other than a few grammatical errors I think this is a very well written novel. I give Ecliptic 4 stakes and I cannot wait until the sequel.

The Crystal Ordeal Review

Title: The Crystal Ordeal

Author: M.G. Dekle

Series: Legends of Leone #1

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

Publish Date: July 18, 2013

Length: 303 pages

Format: paperback, ebook

_______________________________________________________________

Description: At a young age, Leone Verrat learned that her ability to cast simple magical enchantments was limited by a peculiar handicap. Unlike other sorcerers, her spells would not permanently costume the components necessary for magic, resulting in much weaker and shorter effects but returning the ingredients unscathed. Even though she earned barely passable grades in order to graduate from Blueroot Academy, a school specializing in magical studies, an unknown benefactor still saw fit to recommend her for Morgan's Ordeal, a test necessary for any respectable career:

She is soon inextricably linked to her theatrical Ordeal partner, Falchion, as they must brave the dangers of the test together. They both quickly discover that the Ordeal is the least of their concerns when they find themselves in the middle of an ancient power struggle.

The Crystal Ordeal follows Leone from her graduation day through a catastrophic magical mishap and its immediate consequences.

This thrilling full-length novel begins the "Legends of Leone" Young Adult Fantasy series.

My Review: Well, after reading the description I was expecting epic adventures and a tremendous growth in Leone as she makes her way through the Ordeal. However, this novel took me an extremely long time just to become interested in it. And I don't think I ever was completely interested. I found my mind wandering a lot during this novel.

For majority of the novel I did not understand what was so important about the Ordeal. I understand from the description that the Ordeal is important to obtain a respectable job but I don't understand why Leone had to be recommended for it. If the Ordeal is vital to get a job why wouldn't everyone be eligible for it?

Also I think the relationship between Leone and Falchion was very strange. They joke around with each other but have a very weird relationship dynamic. At one point in the story Falchion accuses Leone of believing that she is better than or more powerful than he is because of the fact that she can cast spells. I understand why he thinks this, because of the separation of the schools, but Leone herself admits that she can not do spells well at all.

Excerpt: “Oh, no, I understand,” he said, strapping the blade to his back. “It’s very emotional leaving your home of several years. Most students have a good cry on the last day.” “Did you cry?” She asked.

“What? Of course not,” Falchion exclaimed, a little too loudly. “What kind of a warrior would cry?” “It’s alright if you did. Like you said, it’s very emotional.”

“Well... I might...” he started. “I mean, I didn’t cry,” Leone said.

Falchion coughed. “Neither did I.” Then, quickly changing the subject, stated, “So we need to leave through the main road. They’re handing out supplies to everyone taking the test: food, water, things like that.”

“Okay,” Leone said as they began walking. “I have plenty of room in my pack. Split it half and half?”

“It’s only supplies for two days. Probably just peanut butter and crackers since they’re pretty cheap. I can handle it,” he boasted.

“No, no, I don’t want to risk you pulling a muscle. We’d have to stop walking so you could have a good cry,” she teased him.

“Well that’s just uncalled for,” Falchion said, looking away in mock injury. “Maybe we won’t need the food, though, since we could just go fishing. You brought enough bait.”

“Spell components,” she corrected him. “And a fishing vest.”

“Because it has pockets!” she exclaimed.

Overall Opinion: I think overall I was just underwhelmed with this book. I didn't really see why many things were important and I found the characters to be ordinary, despite the magic. The characters didn't really stand out to me and I think the story was very predictable. I give The Crystal Ordeal 2 stakes because I think it's an ok read if you need something to read but I will not be reading this again.

Get to Know the Author: M.G. Dekle (born August 2, 1983) began writing at a young age and continues to love storytelling. He studied literature at the University of South Florida, earning a Master of Arts degree, and continues to teach Composition classes at local schools.

He began writing in elementary school and found creative teachers who helped guide him as he developed his love of books. Throughout childhood, he would wake up extra early just to read more tales of King Arthur, Robin Hood, and any other fantastical stories before the sun came up. In high school, a production by the drama club of one of his plays, performed for local elementary schools, cemented his path to becoming a writer.

His works are usually centered are usually centered around fantasy and humor, focusing on the characters as they encounter unusual predicaments. He likes for every story he writes to have at least some humorous aspect.

Musing Monday #8

Musing Mondays asks you to muse about one of the following each week...
  • Describe one of your reading habits.
  • Tell us what book(s) you recently bought for yourself or someone else, and why you choose that/those book(s).
  • What book are you currently desperate to get your hands on? Tell us about it!
  • Tell us what you're reading right now – what you think of it, so far; why you chose it; what you are (or, aren't) enjoying.
  • Do you have a bookish rant? Something about books or reading (or the industry) that gets your ire up? Share it with us!
  • Instead of the above questions, maybe you just want to ramble on about something else pertaining to books – let's hear it, then!
Something that really irritates me about when people read books is when they fold the cover of the book all the way backwards.

This literally drives me insane. I want to cringe every time I see this. I don't know if I'm just overly sympathetic to books but why would you bend the poor book's spine so much? What has the book ever done to you?

Not only does the book no longer lay flat when you close it but now the spine is permanently damaged.

I really don't know why but people who do this absolutely baffle me. I see it all the time and I cannot even begin to fathom why someone would do this. It has never crossed my mind to abuse a book in this fashion. Would you want someone to do this to your spine?

Now that that little rant is over, please leave a comment sharing your Musing Monday or respond to mine.
Don't be afraid if you bend book spins. Ok, maybe you should just a little.
Happy Monday! :)

Description (from Goodreads.com): Rural France, June 1925 - The witness to the Moreau massacre, Eternal, is still incarcerated in an asylum, trapped by her amnesia. Only her true love, Edourad, can help rediscover her identity. But the startling truth attracts the attention of The Count, the secret leader of a vampire cult. The Count needs Eternal's blood to achieve his destiny at the Eternal Hour and he has the forces of evil to help him.

With little time remaining, Edouard must unravel Eternal's vampiric past, unmask The Count, and plot their escape. But at every step, dangers beyond his understanding lurk in the shadows, and Eternal is vulnerable to attack the moment he leaves her.

With the Eternal Hour at hand and the forces of darkness converging, Edouard and Eternal must fight to rid the world of this evil. If they lose, The Count will reign supreme and unleash the dogs of war and chaos upon the world. Let the final battle begin.

My Review: I love almost all books about vampires and Luna Aeturnus is no exception. From the beginning I was curious about Eternal and why she is the asylum. I loved how this novel seemed to keep the reader guessing and we are taken on a journey. We learn things about Eternal and the asylum along with Edouard and I think this makes it better because the surprise and mystery is not revealed to the reader first and then we see the character's reaction, we have our own reaction. Luna Aeturnus was not predictable at all.

Excerpt
Edouard shuddered with delight at Eternal’s vibrant caress. He grasped her hand as the music filled him with such dark desires. With a shudder of almost sexual completion, he gripped her hand tighter. His heart hammered painfully as he released his seed. He had to do this or go mad with her passion boiling his blood.

His passion spent, he began to focus on the task at hand – her treatment. “I am going to put you under hypnosis.” A look of terror and unease flitted across her face. “Please tell me what frightens you.” He received an overwhelming feeling of vulnerability.

She almost snarled as she replied, “We have no time for silly games, Edouard.”

He knew what she meant and accepted it as the truth. She instilled in him the need to be fully aware of the Eternal Hour, of the trials to come. “I will not let any harm come to you, do you understand?” He smiled. “It will be for only the briefest of moments.”
She shook her head no. “He is so close now ... he is in the village.”

He understood her truth. “He can do nothing to you in here ... do you believe I am your true love?”
“Why do you need to ask, Edouard?”
“Do this for me, so that I may understand your past. You do want that, yes?”
Though hesitant, she nodded for him to continue with the treatment.

He asked her in his gently lyrical voice, “Keep your eyes on my hand and imagine you are
floating on a warm sea.” He waved his hand gently up and down in front of her face like the rise and fall of waves. Rise and fall. Rise and fall. Rise and ....
She realised just how vulnerable she would be in this altered state. She panicked and shook her head frantically. “Please stop. I will no longer exist if I surrender my power.”

Overall Opinion: My favorite thing about this novel was the dark style and how I was questioning everything in the novel. I think Luna Aeturnus does an excellent job in keeping readers interested because you want to know how the story resolves. I give Luna Aeturnus 4 stakes. I would recommend this book to fans of vampires and mysteries.

Author: Wendy Knight

Publication Date: October 15, 2013

Synopsis: Working with the ex you secretly love to save the souls of the innocent is almost as bad as working with a mighty battle unicorn who would be thrilled to watch you plummet to your death.

Scout is used to pain. Her body has been broken, her heart has been broken, and the only thing keeping her together is her relationship with her younger sister. Lil Bit believes in unicorns and terrifying monsters she calls soul stealers. But unicorns and monsters aren’t real…are they?

When Lil Bit falls prey to the mysterious disease sweeping the country, Scout has two options – believe the doctors who say it’s a pandemic or believe Lil Bit, who says it’s the soul stealers. She chooses her sister and goes looking for the unicorns who are supposed to save them. What she finds aren’t the cute pastel mythical creatures she expects. Battle unicorns are big and tough and full of attitude. Who knew?

Unicorns are real and so are the monsters. Soul stealers are reaping the souls of the innocent, and the unicorns are fighting to stop them. But to save the world, they need the help of humans – the enemy they’re dying to protect. And first to sign up for the fight is the ex-boyfriend Scout’s heart won’t stop loving, no matter how determined she is to hate him.

TOP TEN QUOTES

*They’d broken up over a year ago. She didn’t care. She wasn’t still in love with him. She wasn’t still devastated over his complete and absolute crushing of her heart.
Not at all.

*She still used the same lotion — lilac scented. If he lived forever, that smell would still remind him of her.

*He watched her, watched those lips, fighting memories again. She’d been his first kiss. And nothing since had ever felt as good.

*Trey loved it when she forgot she hated him.

*“I want someone to make me forget Scout ever existed.”

*Trey had never been tempted to kiss his brother before, but he was pretty tempted now.

*She’d had only a brief glimpse, but it was seared into her brain: a gigantic black horse with a burning horn in the center of its head.

*Scout nodded, wishing she wasn’t trembling like a small, hairless dog in a hurricane.
*“Wait!” Trey ran in front of them, holding his hands up like he could stop beasts the size of small elephants. “I’m coming. I want to fight, too.”
“You’re kidding me.” Scout nearly fell off her unicorn.

*It wasn’t possible. She couldn’t. She wasn’t brave enough. She wasn’t strong enough.
“But I am,” Ashra said quietly.
*“Forgive me,” she read in a whisper, her finger tracing the hard black letters tattooed on his arm.

*“I like it better when you call me Princess.” Scout smiled. “Things are a little too real when you start calling me Scout.”

*My heart belongs wherever you are. Even if where you are—” he paused and looked around them, swallowing hard, “—is here.”

About the Author

Wendy Knight was born and raised in Utah by a wonderful family who spoiled her rotten because she was the baby. Now she spends her time driving her husband crazy with her many eccentricities (no water after five, terror when faced with a live phone call, etcetera, etcetera). She also enjoys chasing her three adorable kids, playing tennis, watching football, reading, and hiking. Camping is also big: her family is slowly working toward a goal of seeing all the National Parks in the U.S.

You can usually find her with at least one Pepsi nearby, wearing ridiculously high heel for whatever the occasion may be. And if everything works out just right, she will also be writing.
